How much gas will my GAS IT Refillable bottle hold.
One of our most common questions is how much LPG/ Autogas will our GAS IT bottles hold ?
Before we answer this its worth noting that whilst our the quantity of gas held in our gas bottles is all controlled by proven German made automatic shut off valves fitting in to our Self refillable gas products which takes any hard work out of your hands, there are a few variations that affect the actual amount of gas that's in a bottle.
These include :
1) The ambient temperature - because most fuel pumps are calibrated to dispense 1 Ltr at 15 Deg C so if its colder than 15 Deg C you get more gas in the bottle than you would if it was hotter.
2) The fill hose also holds liquid, so again whilst your bottle might be full your hose will hold extra - so you'll get more in the bottle system than you expect.
3) If the pump is out of calibration again you might show more or less gas than normal.
4) If the bottle / tank is not 100% level then again this affects the amount the bottle takes.
5) If the pump your filling from is over pressured it could add more gas than normal. Stop filling if its starts to look like you are putting more gas in that you'd expect.
All GAS IT refillable gas bottles, and our GAS IT gas tanks for that matter, are fitted with automatic 80% shut off valves which will limit the liquid LPG in a gas bottle / cylinder to approx 80% ( see variations possible above ) of the overall internal capacity of the bottle. All exchange gas companies also do this to to allow for the safe expansion of the LPG due to temperature changes in the weather.
To make it easier for you to see what our gas bottles should approximately hold, we have come up with a simple chart ( see download attachment ) which not only shows you the approximate litres of gas you will put in your GAS IT bottles, but also the overall weight of the gas bottle empty and also weight of the gas in the bottle as well. Its worth noting all this information especially if you are increasing your gas bottle sizes and need to know how this will impact your overall carrying weight.
If you are concerned that a shut off valve is not working correctly then please contact a GAS IT dealer who will carry out tests for you, but as yet in over 40 years of selling these types of valves, we have never need to replace one due to a manufacturing fault which caused over filling but should you want to replace the valves we sell all GAS IT tank and bottle valves as spares on our webshop in either the bottle or tank spares section. We always recommend that you get a trained gas engineer to carry out do any work on your bottle or tank gas system.
If you think that you have over filled your bottle then the best way to check if this is the case, is to weight the bottle and take the weight of the bottle away from the LPG weight ( the Tare weigh of the bottle is stamped on the ring /base of your gas bottle ). This will tell you if your bottle is over filled or not.
